Bolpur was a small rural town prior to the 20th century. Its geographical location 145 KM away north from Kolkata situated at the south border of Birbhum District, geographic co-ordinates 23° 40’ 7” North & 87° 40’ 57” East. The name of the Town “Bolpur” came from the ward “Bolipur” or “Bolipore”. There was a mythical story behind the ‘Bolipur’ or ‘Bolipore’ is that in the Pouranik era Raja Surath of Supur Paragana organized the sacrificial slaughtering (called ‘Boli’) of one lakh goats offered to the goddess “Debi Bhabani” to satisfy her and getting her blessing to regain his Kingdom which was lost earlier. Thus the name comes from Bolipur to Bolpur.
